Eminent Columnists

Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. This was my father’s favourite saying. I’m sure he was referring to the politicians of the future when he said that.

This is the concluding part of the West Bengal Sarees article, featured in our issue last month.
Dhaniakhali
Dhaniakhali in Hooghly district which was once famous for superfine dhotis has switched over to saris in pastel shades due to failing demand. In contrast to the Dhaniakhali saris, the saris of Begumpur have deep and bright colours. Farasdanga in the same district continues to make fine dhotis, perhaps the finest in Bengal while Begampur also in Hooghly district specializes in loosely woven, light-weight and translucent saris.

West Bengal is a treasure trove of handlooms, especially saris. The different kinds of weaves and embroidery found here is mind boggling. Think of Bengal and you think of kantha work saris, tangails, jamdanis, dhakais, balucharis, shantipuris, nilambaris, dhaniakhalis and vishnupuris.

Something about mobile phones! They've been surreptitiously taking over your life, your language skills and a lot more!

Swamy and Manmohan were at their respective computers. Diligently working away at what I assumed were matters of grave international importance, going by their serious countenance. Maybe China was in the process of aligning itself with Pakistan and USA was offering them a group discount on intercontinental ballistic missiles and Ford cars. Or perhaps, the Bangladeshi cricket team had hijacked some of the Indian test players [I could have told them that it would be good news then], or whatever.
