Mala Pasha

“It was all scotch-and-soda theatre”

Mala Pasha is a theatre person with over four decades in the field. She has toured the world with English plays that have been well received from Dubai to Vishakhapatnam. She is also the founder of one of the oldest English theatre groups in the city: The Torn Curtains. She only recently returned to India after eight years in Canada and is hoping to bring with her more of quality English theatre in the city. A few words with Ajinkya Deshmukh:

 

Timeri N. Murari

"I'm not always right, but what the hell!"

Timeri Murari is a journalist by profession and writer by choice. He has authored 14 books including ‘My Temporary Son: an orphan’s journey’ and the bestseller ‘Taj’, which was translated into nine languages. In 2002, he was given the ‘R.K. Narayan Award’ for his work in cinema and theatre. He also wrote and produced the award-winning film, ‘The Square Circle’, voted as ‘one of the ten best films of the year’ by Time Magazine. The film was later adapted to theatre and staged in London to rave reviews. ‘Limping to the Centre of the World’ is his latest book about his trek to Mount Kailas. Here he is in an email interview with Ajinkya Deshmukh:
 

Shobhaa De

“The youth have a ‘bullshit meter’ ”

Shobhaa Dḗ is a writer of over a dozen books. Her latest offering ‘Superstar India’ is a tale of her romance with a free country that shares her age. She has also launched a line of saris, been an editor, a model, a columnist and a busy mother of six children.

Chatla Sreeramulu

“Theatre for the people, of the people and to BUY the people”

Chatla Sreeramulu is the only man to have taught at all four universities that have a department of theatre arts in Andhra Pradesh, also, the first artiste from the state to receive Emeritus Fellowship from the Human Resources Department of the Government of India. He was awarded the certificate of ‘Producer and Teacher’ by the British Drama League, London in 1970. He has been awarded ‘Best Actor’ twice by Andhra Nataka Kala Parishad and has received the State Natak Akademi Award (1982). He has been the chairman of the Nandi TV Awards Committee (2001) and member of the Nandi Film Awards Committee. He is a Member, Board of Studies of four universities in A.P. He is associated with the theatre group, Rasaranjini.

Bhaskar Shewalkar

“Theatre is an itchy disease, like cancer”

Professor Bhaskar Shewalkar, a theatre veteran with over four decades of experience. He was formerly Head of the Department, Theater Arts, Sarojini Naidu School of Performing Arts, University of Hyderabad. He has directed over 90 original and adapted plays in many languages and specializes in Theater Education and Creative Drama (For Children). He has conducted a number of workshops and participated in seminars organized by Sangeet Natak Academy, New Delhi; Central South Zone Cultural Centre, Nagpur and Tiruvanantapuram; National School Of Drama, New Delhi; Regional Research Centre, Bangalore; Centre Of Cultural Resources And Training, Hyderabad and Max Mueller Bhavan. He is also the Founder-President of Rangadhara – one of the oldest theatre groups of Hyderabad.
