Home Eminent Columnists Nizami Facts Preservation of a temple
Print PDF

On 16th September 1934, Nawab Mehdi Yar Jung, Minister for Political Department of the Government of Hyderabad, received a letter from Mr. Thompson, an official attached to the British Residency in Hyderabad. Enclosed with it was a letter from the Prime Minister of the State of Indore, requesting for preservation of the ancient Grishneshwar temple near Ellora caves. Situated in the Nizam’s dominion, this temple was originally built by Shivaji and beautifully renovated by Maharani Ahilya Bai.

The letter stated that the inscriptions appearing on one side of the kund were obliterated and that the pujari had built a chulah in the vestibule of the temple and the smoke disfigured the richly decorated ceiling. Also carvings on the pillars in the front part of the temple were smeared with sandal paste. The case was forwarded to the Religious Affairs Department, which in turn referred it to the Archaeology Department, which did the required restoration. On 05th December 1934, Nawab Mehdi wrote back to the British Residency, informing about the repair and preservation of the temple.

This incident shows the speed and commitment with which an issue relating to the repair of an ancient Hindu temple, was dealt with by the Nizam’s government. The entire action was completed in two months and twenty days.

Month: January 2011.
