Doctor, can you suggest tips on how to maintain my skin and avoid acne; as I am prone to develop more pimples during these summer months. - Anita Joseph.

Acne is one of the most widespread skin conditions that affect individuals across every age group. To make matters worse, it is not caused by one principal cause that can be identified and cured. It usually occurs due to a combination of many factors, which makes decoding the exact reason for an acne breakout a difficult proposition. Thus, the most sensible way to prevent acne is through following some simple precautions that can be incorporated in your daily lifestyle.

Facial Hygiene Tips:
One of the simplest ways of preventing the onset of pimples is by maintaining a personal hygiene, particularly a regular cleansing regime that keeps the facial skin clean. Cleansing the face doesn't necessarily have to mean repeatedly scrubbing the face or use of harsh soaps, since both of them are capable of further complicating the condition. You should make sure that the facial skin is washed with clean water, if possible mineral water, three to four times a day. Depending upon your level of exposure to contaminants and toxic pollutants that are present in the air and your immediate surroundings, evaluate the use of a cleansing agent.

If you are constantly exposed to such factors, the use of a mild soap, like a pH balanced soap is recommended. Try to wash your face with a small amount of gentle pH balanced cleanser, at least twice a day, at a gap of about eight hours with lukewarm water. This is both a preventive and a curative approach, as it can arrest acne from developing or spreading. While washing your face, ensure that you do not scratch or rub hard against your face. This tends to damage the outer surface of the skin and creates skin debris that can lead to the formation of pimples in the future. Once washed, do not dry the skin with rough fabric but rather pat it dry with a soft piece of cloth or towel. Take care to use very clean materials for drying your skin, as freshly washed face tends to be a bit susceptible to catching infection.

Acne diet and nutrition considerations to rid acne more effectively:
Healthy acne diet can aid your body in maintaining healthy skin; however, there appears to be no direct relationship between adult acne and diet. Certain diet considerations can help body immune system and indirectly affect acne treatment:
* Start a diet high in fiber - Salads, whole wheat bread, bran or multi-grain to keep your digestive system moving fast and not burdening it with handling wastes.
* Eat plenty of different fruits every day like apples, berries, grapefruits, oranges and cantaloupes. High content of anti-oxidants helps your body to rid acne.
* Drink eight glasses of water every day. Water helps your skin rid the toxins and also helps in the transport of nutrients to your skin.
* Unlike what you may think, nuts are good for acne prone skin. Nuts are rich in gamma-linolenic acid and certain linoleates which may involve in acne treatment. These essential fatty acids’ deficiency contributes to sebaceous gland hypertrophy and hyperkeratinization of the ducts.
* Avoid meats high in animal fat like salami, pepperoni, meat balls etc.
* Moderate use of sweets in your diet is good; chocolate bars, candies, different drinks high in sugars as a teenager are fine but lower the use of them as you grow up. Honey is an excellent replacement for sugars.
* Food allergies may contribute to adult blemishes and delay acne treatment. If you are experiencing aggravation of your acne with certain foods, eliminate it from your diet.
* Overall, a diet low in saturated fats (animal fats) and sugar can strengthen your immune system which, in turn, help your skin's defense mechanisms and aid your treatment of acne.

Doctor, I got a fruit facial done last week and have noticed that I have developed a slight rash on my face and neck. They had used papaya, apple, orange, grapes and strawberries in it. I wasn’t aware that I was allergic to any of these fruits, externally, until this time. What do I do, to ensure that the rash does not increase? Please help. - Girija.
I expect that the rash would be subsided by the time this article is published. One can expect a mild rash to occur after facials because of excessive rubbing of the skin and if the skin is the oily kind, then some acne eruption can occur. These rashes are transient and subside in a few days time. Just in case they are serious, you must immediately consult a dermatologist. You might be allergic to some kind of fruits such as strawberries; hence you may avoid them next time.

Doctor, I have warts on my hand and the local doctor I visit suggested that I get cryosurgery done. I wanted a second opinion so I am writing to you. Is it a safe procedure and how much would it cost? Could you please advice? Thank you. - Aditya S.
Cryotherapy is a safe procedure. If done by an expereienced person, you can be rest assured. Though post procedure you might experience some pain, it is manageable with good medicines. Other methods for wart removal are electrocautery, radiofrequency cautery, laser removal, chemical cautery. You may speak with a doctor and decide the best option.
