Hyderabad - Introduction

Print PDF

Hyderabad, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh, offers a fascinating panorama of the past, with a rich blend of cultural and historical tradition spanning over 400 years. Presently a strong Industrial, Commercial and Information Technology Center, Hyderabad is emerging into an important tourist destination. Thus today Hyderabad offers a combination of a rich traditional ambience and the most modern, progressive and developed urban centre in India.

"Let millions of men and women of all castes, creeds and religion make it their abode, like fish in the ocean."
– Prayer of Sultan Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah while laying the foundation of Hyderabad

This prayer has come true over the ages. Founded by Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah of Golconda in 1561, Hyderabad was built for the love of a lady, says legend. The city fell in 1687, to the emperor Aurangzeb. After his death in 1707, his viceroy Asaf Jah, declared independence and founded the Asaf Jahi dynasty, which spanned seven generations and included some of the richest men in the world. The Asaf Jahi Nizams ruled till 1948, when the state was merged with the Indian Union.

In 1798, an area north of the Hussain Sagar lake was made into cantonment. The cantonment was named Secunderabad after the then Nizam, Sikander Jah. Both Hyderabad and Secunderabad grew hand in hand as twins and today are one of the rare phenomenons in the world.

Over 400 years old, Hyderabad is often called "The Gateway to the South" offering a fascinating panorama of the past. And also hosts some of the most modern temples of this era like the Hi-Tech City. It is truly a blend of the fairy tale and the earthy a pot pourri of old and new. Where Banjaran gypsies in tinkling ornaments rub shoulders with lively, modern, working women dressed in chooridars or jeans.

Hyderabad is proud of many things :
The city’s pace of life – serene & leisurely, the ways of its people – gracious, the culture rich and varied the people-warm & hospitable, the cuisine & fruits varied and splendid its language has melody, its riches known throughout the world and its style envied by many, its present, making it a delightful city with a lot to offer. History, Culture, Entertainment, Crafts and above all a Great Holiday.
